Virtual group games you can complete in under 1 hour

Although the world is beginning to slowly open up, most of us are still spending a lot of time interacting with each other virtually, rather than in person.

Finding virtual group games that are inclusive, fun, unique, engaging and that can be completed in under one hour can be a challenge - especially if you are tired of online quizzes and virtual escape games.

Let’s take a look at some virtual group games you can complete in under 1 hour.

Virtual group games for work

Finding virtual group games and activities that are suitable to play at work is even trickier than finding them for your friends and family.

No one wants to be the one to bring an awkward, lame or boring group game into the workplace - you’ll never be trusted to find something fun to do again!

Of course virtual group games for work are a bit special, as they normally need to tick a few boxes:

  • Inclusive

  • Novel

  • Fun

  • Not awkward or embarrassing

  • Convenient to arrange

  • Compatible with you internal IT software

  • Optimised for team play

  • Suitable for different group sizes

Let’s have a look at 8 games that meet these criteria.

The Hunt

Not to be confused with a scavenger hunt, The Hunt is a unique team problem solving game that can be played in under an hour and fits all of the criteria above.

It’s a virtual group game suitable for different group sizes, and involves some wit, and some friendly competition between different teams as they search or hunt for an answer to a cryptic puzzle.

The game involves each team trying to solve 10 individual puzzles - a mix of fun visual puzzles, word plays, and reasoning games as well as the master puzzle, which brings all the information together.

The Hunt can be self-led or facilitated, depending on your preference, and can be played on any video conferencing platform - Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Webex, BlueJeans, etc.

It’s very well suited to large groups too, you just need to use breakout rooms.

Bingo

Put your prejudice away, the classic game of Bingo is not just for your grandparents!

It can also work really well if you want to play a virtual group game at work that is light-hearted, fun, and fast.

In fact for a game of Bingo you really only need 15 minutes.

It doesn't get much easier than Bingo in terms of organisation, and you can use a website like My Free Bingo Cards to play a traditional game with a virtual caller, or you can play a custom Bingo game with a theme of your choice.

It's free to run a game for up to 30 players and prices start at $10 for more players.

Online Scavenger Hunt

An online scavenger hunt is something you can organise yourself and can be really fun, if executed well.

This social media scavenger hunt involves creating a list of pictures everyone needs to retrieve from the their social media profile, and is a bit of a twist on a regular scavenger hunt.

It can be anything, such as a photo with water, a picture where someone is wearing something green, or the first photo you ever posted on facebook.

Set a time limit for people to go and retrieve the photos and see who can find the most… that person is the winner.

This sort of game is ideal if you have new employees or new teams who are still trying to build relationships, and can facilitate discussion.

The only down side is privacy, so you’ll need to decide if this is going to be suitable for your workplace.

Long Walks on the Beach

Long Walks on the Beach is an icebreaker game that involves 5 short activities to be completed in teams (of 4-5) in around 30 minutes.

It is one of a number of social games developed by Loumee and uses problem solving and visual puzzles to stimulate discussion amongst the team.

This game is perfect if you are looking for a way for people to get to know each other better, and can lead to some fun discussions and a lot of laughs too!

Charades

Charades can easily be played virtually on Zoom, Teams, Meet, Webex or any other platform you use internally.

It is more suited to extroverted teams and also to smaller group sizes and can easily be played in under one hour.

Split your group into two teams and use a charades idea generator to choose your words and phrases.

The person who's acting out the charade can use the spotlight and their team has a set amount of time to figure out the phrase.

The Riddle

If your team likes the idea of solving riddles then The Riddle is the game for you!

Very well suited to groups who like a bit more of an intellectual challenge - there is a bit of lateral thinking required in this game.

But don’t worry, it’s a team game, and there are a variety of problems to solve, so there is something in there for everyone.

The game itself is normally 40-minutes, although it can be modified with larger group sizes normally meaning faster completion times and vice versa.

The game can be led by you or booked as an event with an external facilitator to guide you.

Psych

Pysch is a trivia game with a twist, designed by Ellen DeGeneres!

It can easily be tailored to work and can be played in under an hour.

To play, participants make up answers to real trivia questions, and one player must choose the real answer among the fake ones.

It’s more suited to smaller groups than bigger ones and you can modify it so that the questions can be personalised.

You’ll need to download the app for this one so it’s better suited to mobile than it is to video conferencing, but can be combined so that you are speaking on video but all in the app at the same time.

Pictionary

Another fast, fun activity you can try is online Pictionary.

The famous Skribbl.io tests people’s drawing skills and can be very funny.

This can be played as one big group or in teams.

If playing in teams you can even screen shot some of the best creations and then get each employee to show off their best / worst creations.

Using a virtual group game to break up the work day is a great idea - and it doesn’t have to take up too much of people’s time.
