How PetSmart are using Loumee for Leadership Training

Learning and Development teams are always looking for innovative and interactive ways to teach and develop leadership skills in their people leaders.

At PetSmart, the L&D team were interested in how Loumee’s games and LEADs could be used as part of training role play, to illustrate different leadership styles.

Role play can be a highly effective tool to teach different leadership styles in team games, with a few different ways to use role play including:

• Assigning different roles: Assign each team member a different leadership style to play out in the game. For example, one person could be a democratic leader, another could be an authoritarian leader, and a third could be a laissez-faire leader. Each person would then have to play their role throughout the game, demonstrating how their leadership style affects the team and their decision-making.

  Alternatively, one person could be assigned a leadership style, and the other members of the team could be the team members with a goal to analyse their leadership style and identify which style they were using.

• Switching roles: Have team members switch roles throughout the game to experience different leadership styles. For example, the democratic leader could switch with the authoritarian leader midway through the game, allowing both to experience how different leadership styles impact the team.

• Debriefing: After the game is over, debrief as a team to discuss how each leadership style affected the game and the team. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each style and how they might be useful in different situations.

This was a great fit for PetSmart, who were looking for a tool to educate their leaders through gamification, allowing them to adjust their leader’s behaviour and improve their skills in real-time, improving the overall effectiveness of their training programs.
